Military History

Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Suffolk’ for UK 13.10.1916 .

Head disembarked at Plymouth with the 28th Bn. 2.12.1916. After several months of intensive training with the 7th Training Bn. He embarked per ‘Warilda’ for France 25.3.1916. The 28th Bn. fought in the trenches in France through winter and spring. Head was invalided with trench fever 26.6.1917. He was admitted to the Richmond Military Hospital. On discharge, he embarked for France to join his unit 24.10.1917 and rejoined his Bn. in the field 4.11.1917. Head was wounded in action with a GSW to his left leg 12.12.1917. He was transferred to the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, then evacuated to England, where he was admitted to Northampton War Hospital 19.12.1917. Head was transferred to the 1st Auxiliary Hospital at Harefield 8.1.1918 then to the Bde. Hospital at Hurdcott 25.3.1918. Head was detached for duty with AIF HQ 25.2.1919. On demobilisation, he was granted fees only, for a non- military activity -book keeping. He returned to Australia in November 1919.

Notes Head is thought to have boarded with the Passmore family at 1 Ethel Street as he boarded  ship with their son.
